SERVICE STAR BANNERS. The Service flag is an banner officially authorized by the Department of Defense for display by families or organizations who have members serving in the Armed Forces during any period of war or hostilities. Since WW1 the blue star service banner has traditionally been hung in a window during wartime to show support for a family member in the military.
