ABU  50% NYLON /  50% COTTON TWILL The ABU or Airman Battle Uniform was adopted by the United States Air Force as the replacement uniform for the old Battle Dress Uniform in late 2007. The new uniform design is a pixilated tiger stripe with four soft earth tones consisting of tan, grey, green and blue. The ABU has permanent crease and is offered in 50-50 nylon-cotton blend permanent press fabric eliminating the need for winter and summer weight uniforms. The Airman Battle Uniform look is similar to the ACU, while it's construction is closer to the BDU. The ABUs we carry are made by Propper International, who was awarded an exclusive license to manufacture the ABU. They are sewn in the Dominican Republic, a GSA-compliant country, and receive the NearIR treatment.

What is NIR Technology?

Near Infrared (NIR) Signature Management Technology is used by the U.S. Department of Defense to prevent detection by NIR Image Converters. These photocathode devices do not detect temperatures, but rather infrared radiation variances. NIR-compliant uniforms use a special fabric that allows soldiers to appear at the same radiation level as the surrounding terrain, thus making them more difficult to detect. NIR technology also make uniforms less visible in low-light environments by reducing the reflection of light.

To ensure that our military personnel avoid any danger connected to the use of uniforms, Propper has clearly labeled products on this website that are approved for military operations. Similarly, products based on military uniform designs (such as the ACU) without NIR technology are also labeled to prevent any error in purchasing.
